An Introduction to Porto Santo
We are proud to present this little unspoilt island gem with its stunning five mile beach and quaint, laid back atmosphere. The direct flights, combined with our selected hotel provide a great combination to revitalise and soak up the sun.
Situated about 25 miles to the northeast of Madeira and measuring only 7 miles by 4 miles, the little known island of Porto Santo is a real treasure and, not surprisingly, a closely guarded secret held by holidaymakers in the know. The south coast is one long stretch of golden sandy beaches bathed by the warm turquoise waters of the Gulf Stream.
The first settlers on the island came from Portugal in the 15th century and it's most notable inhabitant was Christopher Columbus, who married the first Governor's daughter in 1476. Now a museum, their stone house contains artifacts and records which give a fascinating insight into Columbus' life.
Porto Santo retains a strong tradition with its past which can be seen in the quaint local architecture and many wooden windmills dotted around the island.
Dining out and entertainment
For its size, Porto Santo has a variety of restaurants that mostly serve Madeiran and Portuguese dishes, particularly fresh, locally caught seafood and grilled meat. The nightlife on the island is characteristically laid back, although there are a number of cafés and bars in the capital Vila Baleira, with those nearest the beach tending to be the liveliest.
Relax and revive
Porto Santo really is the place to go to revive body and mind, and the beach sands allegedly have restorative properties that give relief from aches and pains.
Additionally, our featured property has a comprehensive spa and well being facilities providing a full range of health treatments and relaxation areas.
Sports and outdoor activities
The warm, clear waters around the island provide ideal conditions for snorkelling, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, scuba diving, jet skiing and kite surfing.
Inland, the gently undulating landscape is popular for horse riding, mountain biking and walking. There is also a tennis academy with eight courts and an 18-hole golf course designed by Seve Ballesteros, plus a 9-hole pitch and put circuit.
