It’s not difficult to see why savvy British travellers go on holiday to Madeira. With a delightful sub-tropical climate, a rich cultural heritage and hospitable people, it’s the perfect place for a sophisticated and relaxing break.
A holiday in Madeira offers the chance to find out why the island is known as “the floating garden of the Atlantic”. Its natural beauty has been celebrated for many centuries, with the fertile soil and endless sunshine seemingly bringing every inch of the landscape into colourful bloom.
The island was formally “discovered” by Portuguese mariners in 1419, though there is evidence that their existence was already known to European mapmakers. Settlement began in 1420, and sugar cane and beet plantation soon became the driving force in the island’s economy. By the time of Britain’s brief occupation of Madeira from 1807 to 1814, its most famous export was wine – and this is still the case today.
After Lisbon, Madeira is the wealthiest region of Portugal, with the population of just over 250,000 enjoying a high standard of living. And thanks to sensitive, low-impact development, the island has retained its distinctiveness and charm for 21st-century visitors to enjoy
