The Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra is ranked in the top 100 courses in Europe and has hosted Madeira's most prestigious tournaments,
including the Madeira Island Open, which has been part of the European Tour for the past 16 years, since 1993. The course was built in
1937. Robert Trent Jones Sr. redesigned the course in 1991, creating a true masterpiece on a par with his other fabulous creations, which
include Valderrama and Spyglass Hill of Pebble Beach.
Described by golf journalists as one of the most scenic courses on the European Tour, it provides a spectacular golfing experience with its
challenging terrain, ample fairways, beautiful lakes, strategic bunkers and four different tee positions. Improvements are carried out on the
course every year to maintain its appealing quality of being highly challenging without being too severe.
Santo da Serra offers the following facilities:
- 27 holes (9003 meters)
- Driving Range
- Putting green (2 levels)
- Chipping green with bunkers
- PGA Golf Professional
- Fully equipped Pro-Shop
- Club hire
- Electric buggies and trolleys for hire
- Gym and Sauna
- Changing rooms
- Clubhouse Restaurant
- Buggy bar service
Nowadays, Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra, offers 27 Holes, known as MACHICO (Red course), DESERTAS (Blue Course) and SERRAS (Yellow course),
each one with 9 Holes.
The MACHICO and the DESERTAS courses are the ones that are usually played on the Madeira Island Open, while the SERRAS Course, though slightly
plain, maintains the same game level. With three optional tees at each hole, the player encounters different game levels which may either lead
to a simple relaxing game or to a more challenging test.
